A COMMITTED VINEYARD

Marie-Helene Yung-Theron takes great care of the natural setting of Château de Portets. She wishes to protect its wild beauty and has therefore chosen a style of vine growing and wine making that ensure the highest respect for the environment.

Since 2017, Château de Portets is committed in an Environmental Management System (SME), led by the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bordeaux (CIVB). In 2024, the domain was labelled Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value) level 4, and is constantly improving to reach a higher rank in the classification.

This commitment implies a responsible and sustainable management of the castle’s activities, respecting its employees, neighbours and local ecosystem.

In practical terms, it means :

  • Monitoring energy consumptions
  • Selective waste sorting
  • A wastewater treatment system
  • Agricultural practices inspired by agro-ecology principles

Our environmental commitment is voluntary. It follows the initiatives that Chateau de Portets already implemented such as:

  • The tilling of the soil
  • The grass cover in the vineyard
  • The use of biocontrol products (natural animal, vegetal or mineral substances that stimulate the immune system of the plants).

The restructuration of an old vineyard enables us to combine the preservation of the soils with the best quality for our grapes through :

  • The renewal of parcels
  • A better selection of clones
  • A balance between our different grape varieties (Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon)

Our vineyard classified as Graves Red is thus made of :

  • Only one parcel of 20 hectares
  • 55% Merlot which creates full-bodied wines, very fruity (red berries aromas), with some spicy notes. This variety brings smoothness to the wines.
  • And 45% Cabernet Sauvignon which adds its strong tannins. The final blend of the two varieties gives birth to a well structured wine that can age and gain complexity and intensity through the years.

On the other hand, our vineyard of Graves White is made of :

  • 60% Semillion bringing density, fat and smoothness to the wine, with candied fruits and honey notes.
  • 30% Sauvignon delivering very specific aromas, widely influenced by the nature of the soil. Wines result elegant and balanced.
  • And 10% Muscadelle that brings suavity and mellowness in the blend. It gives birth to smooth wines with strong flowery aromas.
